Rachelle's Comics Corner homepage

Here are the reasons why, as copied from my first post on Rachelle’s Comics Corner:

I’ve been stalking Substack from a distance for the past year, unsure if I wanted to invest time in building another social media presence.

Then fellow cartoonist Sarah Morrissette asked me why I was considering it. As I dashed off three good reasons for starting a substack blog, I sold myself on the idea. Isn’t it nice when friends help you figure out what’s going on inside your brain?

1. A hub for creatives and those who love them

Like Sarah, I’m a cartoonist. I’m also an illustrator for hire. I make stuff, in a quiet room, by drawing and writing. Yes, I talk to myself. Even wackier, I pose for myself. Here are a few of my most embarrassing Photo Booth pulls as I try to nail down a character’s gesture or expression.

I need other folks to talk shop with, and I’ve noticed droves of cartoonists, writers, and illustrators launching substacks. Ever the dutiful lemming, I’m joining in, but I don’t think this is just a trend. Substack has features that make it especially attractive to a creative like me, so I feel confident that this shiny new thing has long-term benefits.

2. My space to publish and teach

There will be two content directions for Rachelle’s Comics Corner.

Publishing comics, cartoons, and the story behind the story

I feel fortunate to have been published in top-notch newspapers and magazines, such as The New Yorker and The New York Times. I’m currently working with a literary agent to sell my graphic novel to a traditional publisher.

I’m going to write (and draw!) about how these career milestones have come about and how they continue to evolve. I’m also going to publish webcomics here for free to my dedicated audience and the community in general. Substack will be a direct pipeline from me to you.

Offering lessons in drawing and making comics

Not only do I have experience giving private lessons and public workshops, but this year I’ll be initiating a comics curriculum at a local art institute. Substack is a great place for me to share my hard-won wisdom, tips, and tricks.

You know what they say – the first one’s for free, kid. I have a few more posts along the educational track that I’ll leave open to the public, others will be subscriber-only.

3. Subscription options

The tiered subscription options make Substack an alternate income stream for creators. Here’s what I have to offer and how you can help.

Are you one of my true blue fans?

Yeah, I’m looking at you, Mom. Substack offers yearly and monthly subscriptions. I’m customizing the Founding Members tier for those of you who would like to support me during my graphic novel journey. It’s been a long road so far, and I’ve still got a ways to go. Once Wolf House Fables is published, Founding Members will receive original sketches and a mention in the acknowledgment section.

Are you interested in learning from me?

Subscribers get access to my educational content. I’ll also post here about how to join classes and arrange for private mentorships.

Thanks for popping into my Comics Corner. I hope you feel at home. Feel free to share with others.
